Kids are naturally enthusiastic about geology. Ask parents how many rocks they have removed from their kids’ pockets! Our school trips channel this
innate curiosity into specific learning experiences. Our classroom teaching style encourages participation: students have fun, while working with specimens they can keep, ensuring their on-going interest.
Mineralogy Trip Students learn physical mineralogy techniques, including Moh hardness scale, streak and cleavage testing. Everyone will collect
and identify quartz, calcite, fluorite, barite & feldspar. Gravel road is accessible by bus or carpool. 1/2 kilometer hike brings students to mine. Half day trip features mineralogy & collecting. Full day includes
mineralogy, collecting, short hike to historic ghost town, history, science scavenger hunt, and building edible earth models.
Price: Half day, $5/person. Full day, $8/person. Teachers and up to 5 drivers are free, other accompanying adults pay fee. 50% deposit or
school purchase order required to hold date. One class (up to 30 students) per trip. Adult to student ratio of a least 1:7 required. A written confirmation will be sent when we receive your booking.
Rock Cycle Trip On this overnight trip, we study igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, with collecting opportunities at Rock Candy,
Stonerose Fossils in Republic, WA, and our private copper mine site. We stay in comfortable bunk house style accomodations in Republic; separate male & female areas, shared kitchen facilities. Dinner,
breakfast, lunch, and an evening edible geology program are provided. Arrive in Grand Forks by 1 p.m. on the first day, return home by dark the following day.
Price: $30/student, minimum 20. Teachers and chaperones are free.
Mineralogy Class, at your school - 3rd through 6th
Students learn the physical properties of minerals, then work in groups to identify specimens. A highly motivational class, as kids
keep all the minerals they can identify at the end of the lesson! Minerals are the building blocks of the earth, and our society depends upon them for fuel, housing, transportation, and
technology. Learn how geologists find minerals, and see lots of beautiful specimens! One hour.
- Price: $50 per class. Minimum 3 classes if your school is more
than 150 kilometers from Grand Forks. We can offer up to 4 classes per day. Taught by Brian Erker (see Meet our Guides).
- Maximum 30 students.
